Serena Williams Keeps Singles Comeback Possibility Alive Ahead of Queen’s Club Return
Tennis legend Serena Williams has not ruled out a return to singles competition , even as she prepares for her much anticipated comeback in doubles at the Queen’s Club Championships , marking her first competitive appearance since the 2022 US Open .
The 23 time Grand Slam singles champion is set to return to action at the Queen’s Club event, where she will compete in doubles alongside 19 year old Canadian Victoria Mboko . The pairing brings together experience and youth as Williams steps back onto the court after nearly four years away from competitive tennis.
Speaking ahead of her return, the 44 year old Williams said she is not closing the door on singles but stressed that a comeback in the format is not imminent. She admitted she would need more training before considering it seriously and emphasized that her focus right now is simply on enjoying the game again.
Williams last played competitively at the 2022 US Open , where she hinted at “evolving” away from tennis rather than formally retiring. Since then, she has largely stayed away from the tour, spending time with her family and stepping back from the demands of professional sport.
Reflecting on her return, Williams said she once believed she would not play again, but changed her mind after conversations and a renewed sense of curiosity. She described the timing as ideal, noting that her children are on summer break, allowing her to return without pressure and simply enjoy the experience.
“I don’t need to win,” said Serena Williams , adding that she has already achieved more than most athletes could imagine and feels no pressure to prove anything. Instead, she described the comeback as a chance to play freely, without expectations or burden.
Her doubles partner Victoria Mboko praised Williams’ sharp ball striking, fitness, and ability to quickly regain rhythm despite the long break. Williams, in turn, said Mboko reminded her of her younger self in terms of attitude, resilience, and competitive drive.
Williams and Mboko are scheduled to begin their campaign on Tuesday against third seeded pair Nicole Melichar Martinez and Erin Routliffe .
While her immediate focus remains on doubles, Serena Williams made it clear that singles is not off the table, leaving open the possibility of another chapter in one of tennis’s most iconic careers.
