Shaili and Women's Relay Quartet Power India to Double Gold, Shirse Wins Silver
India enjoyed a rewarding start to the New Taipei City Athletics Open on Saturday, with long jumper Shaili Singh and the women's 4x100m relay team clinching gold medals, while hurdler Tejas Shirse added a silver to ensure every Indian athlete in action finished on the podium.
The standout moment of the day came from the Indian women's sprint relay quartet of SS Sneha, Srabani Nanda, Sudeshna Shivankar and Tamanna , who delivered a brilliant performance to claim gold in 44.07 seconds . Their effort not only secured the top spot but also matched the existing meet record, underlining India's growing strength in sprint events on the international stage.
In the long jump arena, Shaili Singh once again showcased her consistency by securing the gold medal with a leap of 6.24 metres . While the mark was below her season's best of 6.58m , achieved during her silver medal-winning performance at the Federation Cup last month, it proved more than enough to keep her ahead of the competition. The talented youngster, whose personal best stands at 6.76m , continues to establish herself as one of India's most promising field athletes.
The men's 110m hurdles final produced one of the closest contests of the day. National record holder Tejas Shirse clocked 13.58 seconds in a hard-fought race but narrowly missed out on gold by just 0.01 seconds . Home favourite Hsieh Yuan-kai of Chinese Taipei crossed the finish line in 13.57 seconds to take the title, leaving Shirse with a well-earned silver medal.
Despite the narrow defeat, Shirse's performance added to an impressive opening-day tally for the Indian contingent, which achieved a perfect record of podium finishes.
With two gold medals and a silver already in the bag, India has laid down an early marker at the competition and will look to build on the momentum when the meet concludes on Sunday.
