Shehbaz Sharif Raises Kashmir At UNGA, Credits Trump For ‘Timely Intervention’ In 2025 India-Pak Conflict

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif used his address to the UN General Assembly on Friday to revive Islamabad’s Kashmir narrative while crediting US President Donald Trump for what he called a “timely intervention” during last year’s military confrontation between India and Pakistan.

In his nearly 23-minute speech, Sharif thanked Trump for his “resolute and visionary leadership”, claiming the US president’s intervention helped prevent further escalation and “saved hundreds of millions of lives in South Asia”.

Trump has repeatedly claimed he helped stop the India-Pakistan conflict, including in his UNGA address earlier this week. India has consistently rejected any role for third-party intervention, maintaining that the understanding to halt military action was reached directly between New Delhi and Islamabad.

The 2025 conflict followed the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Sharif said a “just and fair solution” to Kashmir was necessary to ensure South Asia did not again reach the brink of conflict. India has repeatedly rejected Pakistan’s claims at the UN, maintaining that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India.

New Delhi is expected to respond through its Right of Reply, as it traditionally does after Pakistan’s UNGA address.

Sharif also raised the Indus Waters Treaty, which India placed in abeyance following the Pahalgam attack. New Delhi has said the treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably ends support for cross-border and other forms of terrorism.

The Pakistan PM also highlighted Islamabad’s claimed diplomatic role in the ongoing US-Iran conflict, saying Pakistan had brought Washington and Tehran together in Islamabad.

Sharif repeatedly praised Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief, crediting him with helping create space for diplomacy during difficult circumstances.
