British tennis star Emma Raducanu has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of her opening match after scans confirmed a stress fracture in her right leg, dealing a major blow to home hopes at the prestigious tournament.

The 2021 US Open champion was scheduled to begin her campaign against Antonia Ruzic on No. 1 Court but made the difficult decision to pull out after medical advice confirmed the severity of her injury.

Raducanu had been managing discomfort since her strong run to the final at Queen’s Club , where she showed some of her best form in recent seasons. However, the issue worsened following a heavy workload during the grass court build up.

In a statement shared on Instagram, she said she had done everything possible to be ready for Wimbledon but was left with no option after a final scan confirmed the injury had developed into a stress fracture .

She expressed deep disappointment, saying that playing at Wimbledon in front of a home crowd meant everything to her and that the situation was difficult to process.

Earlier in the day, Raducanu had still expressed optimism about competing, explaining that the injury first surfaced during the clay court season before being aggravated at Queen’s Club, where she played multiple matches in a short span.

Since her breakthrough US Open 2021 triumph as a qualifier at the age of 18, Raducanu has struggled with consistency on the tour, though recent performances had suggested a return to form before this setback.

Her withdrawal leaves Wimbledon without one of its most high profile British contenders and adds another difficult chapter to her injury hit journey in recent seasons.
