Europe’s record-breaking heatwave continues to take a deadly toll as extreme temperatures spread across more countries, prompting health warnings and renewed concerns over the impact of climate change .

France has reported around 1,000 excess deaths linked to the intense heat since June 24, according to the country’s public health agency. Officials said daily deaths increased significantly during the peak of the heatwave, with around 85% of the fatalities involving people aged 65 and above . Authorities also reported a rise in deaths occurring at home, particularly in the Île-de-France region.

The heatwave has now shifted towards eastern Europe , where several countries are experiencing record temperatures. Poland recorded an all-time high of 40.5°C , breaking a decades-old temperature record, while parts of Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Switzerland also witnessed temperatures reaching the triple digits.

Meteorologists described the event as historic , noting that several European cities have experienced temperatures far above their seasonal averages for an extended period. The extreme heat has increased risks of dehydration, heatstroke and pressure on healthcare systems and electricity networks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that extreme heat is becoming increasingly common, with Europe warming faster than any other continent. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said heat stress has become a “silent killer” , affecting millions of people and exposing gaps in the preparedness of homes, workplaces and public facilities.

The soaring temperatures have also raised concerns over outdoor events, including Wimbledon and the Tour de France , where heat could affect athletes and spectators.

Governments across Europe have issued safety advisories, opened cooling facilities and urged people to take precautions as forecasts suggest that parts of the continent may continue facing dangerous heat conditions. The crisis has intensified calls for stronger measures to address the growing threat of extreme weather events .
