PV Sindhu delivered one of her most commanding performances of the season to storm into the women’s singles semi finals of the Australian Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Friday, keeping India’s hopes alive while teenage prospect Tanvi Sharma saw her impressive run come to an end.

The two time Olympic medallist looked in complete control as she dismantled Chinese Taipei’s Chen Su Yu in straight games, winning 21-6, 21-9 in just 27 minutes to book her place in the last four.

From the opening exchanges, Sindhu imposed herself with authority. Her movement across the court appeared sharper, her attacking intent clearer, and her ability to dictate rallies left Chen struggling to find answers. The Indian star combined precision with power and barely allowed her opponent any breathing space throughout the contest.

After cruising through the opening game, Sindhu maintained the same intensity in the second and wrapped up the match with remarkable ease, underlining a return to form at a crucial stage of the tournament.

Awaiting her in the semi finals is a high profile clash against Japan’s top seed Akane Yamaguchi , who ended the memorable campaign of Indian teenager Tanvi Sharma with a 21-14, 21-14 victory in another quarter final.

Despite the defeat, Tanvi’s run remains one of the encouraging stories for Indian badminton this week, with the youngster showing composure and promise against elite competition.

For Sindhu, however, the challenge now becomes even bigger. The Indian holds a slender 15-13 head to head advantage over world No. 3 Yamaguchi, setting up what promises to be one of the most anticipated contests of the tournament.

The semi final appearance comes at an important moment in Sindhu’s season. The former world champion has been searching for consistency on the BWF World Tour and continues her pursuit of a first title since lifting the Syed Modi International crown in December 2024 .

With confidence building and momentum gathering, Sindhu now stands just two wins away from ending that wait.
