Sindhu's Brave Comeback Falls Short As Ratchanok Intanon Clinches Arctic Open Semifinal Spot
Two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu put up a spirited fight before suffering a three-game defeat to top seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the quarterfinals of the USD 500,000 Arctic Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Friday.
The sixth-seeded Indian went down 11-21, 21-19, 18-21 in a gripping contest lasting one hour and two minutes. Despite losing the opening game, Sindhu fought back to level the match before Intanon held her nerve in the decider to secure a place in the semifinals.
The defeat extended Intanon's advantage over Sindhu in their head-to-head record to 10-4, underlining the challenge the Indian continues to face against the former world champion.
Sindhu struggled to find her rhythm in the opening game as Intanon established control to take it comfortably 21-11. However, the Indian raised her intensity in the second game, producing a determined response to edge out her opponent 21-19 and force a decider.
With the match finely poised, both players battled for control in the final game. Sindhu stayed within striking distance, but Intanon eventually prevailed 21-18 to end the Indian's campaign in the women's singles event.
The 31-year-old Hyderabad shuttler had entered the quarterfinals on the back of a convincing second-round victory over Japan's Riko Gunji. Sindhu defeated Gunji 21-15, 21-15 to advance, demonstrating the form that has kept her competitive on the international circuit.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist who won the Japan Open Super 750 title in July, had arrived at the Finnish tournament looking to build on that success. Although her Arctic Open run ended in the last eight, her fightback against the fifth-ranked Intanon offered a competitive contest against one of the leading players in the draw.
Meanwhile, Indian men's doubles pair Krishna Prasad Garaga and Pruthvi Krishnamurthi Roy were scheduled to face Denmark's Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer later on Friday.
The Arctic Open, a Super 500 event on the Badminton World Federation circuit, offers valuable ranking points and prize money, making it an important stop for players seeking to strengthen their positions in the international badminton season.
