SIT Begins Scientific Testing of Sabarimala Artefacts in Gold Loss Investigation

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Sabarimala gold loss case has begun collecting samples from key temple artefacts for scientific analysis , a crucial step in determining the quantity of gold used in the shrine's structures.

Led by investigation officer S. Sasidharan , the SIT reached the Lord Ayyappa Temple on Sunday along with police officials, Legal Metrology Department personnel and skilled workers. The team started dismantling and collecting samples from the Prabhamandalam (decorative metal arch) and the upper door-frame plates of the sanctum sanctorum. The process is expected to take two days.

The temple was opened for the monthly poojas of the Malayalam month of Mithunam .

The SIT had earlier informed the court that samples from certain artefacts inside the Sreekovil had already been collected, but the Prabhamandalam and door-frame plates could not be dismantled due to objections and practical difficulties faced by workers.

Investigators argued that expert-assisted dismantling was necessary to determine the actual weight of the structures and accurately assess the gold cladding on them. Accepting the request, the court permitted the exercise and directed that the samples be sent to a laboratory for scientific examination to conclusively establish the facts of the case.

The investigation is aimed at verifying allegations of discrepancies in the quantity of gold used on temple artefacts through forensic and scientific methods.

The SIT recently informed the Kerala High Court that investigations in the two cases linked to the alleged gold loss had been completed. A total of 12 persons were arrested during the probe, and all are currently out on bail.
