A routine training flight ended in tragedy on Friday evening after a small aircraft crashed into Beijing's iconic CITIC Tower , killing the lone pilot in a rare aviation accident that sent emergency teams rushing to one of the Chinese capital's busiest business districts.

The aircraft, identified as a Sunward SA60L Aurora , a two seat training plane that had taken off from the nearby Shifosi Airport , reportedly veered off its scheduled flight path before crashing into the 528 metre tall CITIC Tower at around 5:55 pm .

The pilot, identified in reports as Liu Junhua , was the only person on board. He died in the crash. Authorities have not confirmed any injuries on the ground, with swift evacuations and an immediate emergency response helping prevent what could have been a far more devastating incident.

Eyewitnesses said a loud impact was heard moments before smoke began rising from the side of the skyscraper. Emergency services, including firefighters, police personnel and medical teams, quickly cordoned off the area as workers inside the building were safely evacuated.

Officials said the lightweight aircraft punched a visible hole into the exterior of the tower and triggered minor fires, which were brought under control within a short time. Preliminary assessments indicate that the modern skyscraper did not suffer major structural damage despite the dramatic collision.

The CITIC Tower , one of Beijing's most recognisable landmarks and the tallest building in the city, houses offices of major financial institutions and multinational companies. The unusual crash drew widespread attention across China, with videos and images circulating rapidly on social media.
