Sonam Wangchuk's Health Worsens as CJP Protest Enters Day 13, Support Grows
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar entered its 13th day on Thursday, with growing concern over the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk , who has been on a five day hunger strike . According to organisers, Wangchuk's blood sugar level dropped to 60 , while his blood pressure remained low , raising fresh concerns about his condition.
Sharing the health update on social media, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said Wangchuk's condition was steadily deteriorating and alleged that the government would be responsible if anything happened to him. He also reiterated the protest's demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan , accusing the government of failing to ensure accountability over alleged irregularities in the examination system.
Dipke also launched an outreach initiative titled "Chai Pe Charcha with Cockroaches" , interacting with protesters to gather suggestions on how the movement could be strengthened and expanded.
Student participation in the agitation continued, with six members of the All India Students' Association (AISA) remaining on an indefinite hunger strike from a separate stage. AISA had earlier claimed that JNUSU Joint Secretary Danish's blood sugar level had dropped to 61 mg/dL , while Aameen and Deepak Kumar Verma were advised by doctors to end their fast due to worsening health.
Medical concerns surrounding Wangchuk had emerged a day earlier as well. Doctors reported that his blood glucose level had fallen to 61 to 64 mg/dL , and that he had lost around 2.4 kg in three days . Wangchuk said he was feeling only slightly tired and attributed the low sugar levels to the body's natural response to prolonged fasting.
The protest has drawn support from several political leaders and activists. CPI(ML) Liberation General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya is expected to visit the protest site, while leaders including Yogendra Yadav , Prashant Bhushan , Brinda Karat , D Raja , Anjali Bhardwaj and Sagarika Ghose have already expressed solidarity.
The CJP protest , which began on June 20 , was launched over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including NEET , and has since expanded to raise broader issues of accountability, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls . As Wangchuk's health continues to decline, the protest is drawing increasing national attention.
