Former India captain Sourav Ganguly received a fitting tribute on his 54th birthday as he was inducted into the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame during the governing body's annual conference in Edinburgh. The honour recognizes Ganguly's immense contribution to Indian cricket as a player, captain and administrator.

With Ganguly's induction, the number of Indians in the ICC Hall of Fame has risen to 12 , placing him alongside some of the country's greatest cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Expressing his gratitude, Ganguly thanked ICC chairman Jay Shah and the international body for the recognition, describing it as a "huge honour" and saying it was special to be counted among some of cricket's greatest names.

Known for transforming Indian cricket during a challenging period, Ganguly's most significant contribution came as captain between 2000 and 2005 . Taking charge in the aftermath of the match-fixing crisis, he rebuilt the team's confidence and instilled a fearless attitude that helped India become a formidable force both at home and abroad. Under his leadership, several young players flourished, laying the foundation for India's rise as a global cricket powerhouse in the years that followed.

One of the defining moments of his career came during the 2002 NatWest Trophy final at Lord's. Following India's dramatic victory over England, Ganguly celebrated by waving his shirt from the Lord's balcony, creating one of the most iconic images in cricket history and symbolising a new era of self-belief in Indian cricket.

As a player, Ganguly amassed 7,212 runs in 113 Tests and 11,363 runs in 311 One-Day Internationals , making him one of India's most successful batters. He also formed one of cricket's most celebrated opening partnerships with Tendulkar in ODI cricket.

After retiring from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly moved into administration and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2019 to 2022. He currently heads the Cricket Association of Bengal.

The Hall of Fame honour celebrates not only Ganguly's achievements on the field but also his lasting impact on the growth, culture and legacy of Indian cricket.
