South Africa have created history by advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup for th e first time after a hard fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in a crucial Group A encounter on Wednesday night.

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko finished a well delivered cross from Tshepang Moremi , sealing a landmark win that secured South Africa’s place in the next round. The result also confirmed their second place finish in Group A behind hosts Mexico, who maintained a perfect record with three wins.

South Africa’s journey to the knockout stage was built on resilience after a difficult start. They opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico , but quickly recovered with a late equaliser to draw 1-1 against Czech Republic , keeping their hopes alive heading into the final group match.

In the decisive clash, Bafana Bafana produced a disciplined and determined performance to upset a strong South Korean side and secure qualification. It marks a significant milestone for South African football, as the team had previously failed to progress beyond the group stage in 1998, 2002, and 2010 when they hosted the tournament .

South Korea, meanwhile, entered the match with momentum after a comeback 2-1 win over Czech Republic and a narrow 1-0 loss to Mexico . The Asian side, however, could not find a way past South Africa’s defence in a match that decided their fate in the group.

Despite the defeat, South Korea’s World Cup record remains strong in recent editions. They became the first Asian nation to reach the knockout stage in 2002, finishing fourth, and also progressed in both 2010 and 2022.

South Africa will now face Canada , the Group B runner up, in a knockout match scheduled for Sunday in Inglewood, California, as they look to extend their historic run on the global stage.
