SpaceX Falcon Rocket Stage Slams Into Moon, Raising Debris Concerns

A spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage has confirmedly impacted the Moon, validating predictions made by astronomers after the rocket drifted through space for more than a year. The uncontrolled booster struck the lunar surface near Einstein Crater, highlighting growing concerns over space debris as lunar exploration accelerates.

The rocket stage was launched on January 15, 2025, carrying Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience lunar landers. After deploying the spacecraft, the upper stage remained in space without a controlled disposal plan. Over time, a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces altered its trajectory, eventually sending it on a collision course with the Moon.

Confirmation of the impact came after scientists using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile detected a plume containing sodium and lithium shortly after the predicted collision. Researchers said the sodium was likely released from lunar soil, while the lithium is believed to have originated from the rocket, providing strong evidence that the impact occurred as expected.

Although the collision was not directly photographed, experts say the observations leave little doubt that the rocket struck the lunar surface. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to capture images of the newly formed crater during a future flyover, allowing scientists to assess the impact site and estimate the crater's size, believed to be 20 to 40 metres wide.

SpaceX said the impact was unintentional, explaining that natural orbital changes caused by solar activity and the Moon's gravity redirected the rocket. The company added it is working with NASA to improve disposal practices for future deep-space missions.

The incident has renewed debate over lunar debris management as missions under NASA's Artemis programme, alongside commercial efforts by SpaceX, Blue Origin and other space agencies, continue to increase. Scientists warn that preventing uncontrolled impacts will become increasingly important as robotic missions and future astronaut landings make the Moon a far busier destination.
