Spain Survive England Scare At Wembley, Oyarzabal Seals 3-2 Nations League Comeback

Spain extended its unbeaten run to 39 matches after surviving a major scare at Wembley to beat England 3-2 in a thrilling Nations League clash.

Spain made a dream start, taking the lead inside two minutes through Lamine Yamal, who dispossessed Marc Guehi before firing a low shot into the far corner past James Trafford.

The visitors continued to threaten, with Ferran Torres twice unable to capitalise on clear opportunities. England gradually found its rhythm and turned the game around before halftime.

Antony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute after combining with Jude Bellingham on a swift counterattack. Four minutes later, Harry Kane put England ahead with a header that deflected off Marc Cucurella.

England then had a golden opportunity to take control early in the second half. VAR awarded a penalty after Rodri brought down Kane inside the box. But Kane slipped during his run-up and failed to convert, allowing Spain to escape.

The miss proved decisive.

Spain levelled in the 60th minute when substitute Alex Baena curled a low shot into the corner after England lost possession close to its own goal, with Nico O'Reilly punished for the error.

Spain completed its comeback 14 minutes later. Baena's assist found substitute Mikel Oyarzabal, who calmly chipped Trafford from close range to make it 3-2.

Oyarzabal once again became England's Wembley nemesis, having scored the winner when Spain beat England in the Euro 2024 final.

The victory was Spain's first match since beating Argentina in the World Cup final, and coach Luis de la Fuente's side showed its resilience after being pushed to the limit.

England coach Thomas Tuchel said the missed penalty could have been the decisive moment, while also highlighting the individual mistakes that allowed Spain back into the match.

Elsewhere, Luka Modric scored in Croatia's 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. Spain moved top of Group A3 on goals scored.
