Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform Hyderabad into a global sporting destination, declaring that his dream is to see the city host the 2036 Olympic Games . The vision is anchored in a comprehensive sports policy , world-class infrastructure, and the establishment of the Young India Physical Education and Sports University , positioning Telangana as a key player in India's Olympic aspirations.

Launching the university's logo and official website, the Chief Minister said the state is committed to building a robust sports ecosystem that nurtures talent from the grassroots while creating international-standard facilities for elite athletes. The initiative aligns with India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics , with Hyderabad aiming to emerge as a strong contender through sustained investment in sports development.

Revanth Reddy said the government will first introduce a statewide sports policy , followed by the development of training centres, sports academies, specialised coaching institutes and modern stadiums . He emphasised that identifying rural talent, promoting scientific coaching and strengthening grassroots participation are central to the government's long-term strategy.

Recalling Hyderabad's sporting legacy, the Chief Minister noted that the city had successfully hosted the 2003 Afro-Asian Games and the 2007 Military World Games , but had not witnessed similar international events in recent years. He criticised the previous BRS government for not formulating a comprehensive sports policy and expressed concern over stadiums being diverted for political meetings and social functions instead of sporting activities.

A major highlight of the government's plan is the Young India Physical Education and Sports University , which will be built on 82 acres under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and is scheduled to open by December 2028 . The university will offer specialised programmes in sports science, sports medicine, biomechanics, performance analytics, physical education and sports management . Former India captain Kapil Dev and Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra will serve on its governing board.

Addressing Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha , Revanth Reddy sought her support in shaping Telangana into an international sports hub capable of producing world-class athletes.

The Chief Minister also announced that Telangana will host the Khelo India Games this November, followed by the 8th Khelo India Youth Games 2026 , the National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet , and premier competitions including the Hockey India League , World Pickleball League , Archery Premier League and Tennis Premier League . The government believes these events will not only strengthen the state's sporting ecosystem but also boost tourism, investment and Hyderabad's reputation as a leading destination for international sporting events.
