Swami Vivekananda Statue Unveiled at Indian Mission in Chicago
A life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda was unveiled at the Consulate General of India in Chicago by India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra , in a ceremony that celebrated the philosopher’s enduring influence and highlighted the growing cultural bonds between India and the United States.
Vivekananda, who introduced Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, remains best known in the US for his historic address at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. His speech, which called for religious harmony and universal brotherhood, is widely regarded as a defining moment in interfaith dialogue.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Sunday, brought together elected representatives, Indian diaspora organisations, and community leaders. The event featured a rendition of Vande Mataram and discussions on Vivekananda’s teachings of service, unity, and harmony among all faiths. In a social media post, Kwatra described the statue as a generous gift from the Indian diaspora and said Vivekananda’s timeless message continues to inspire people across generations.
During the event, the ambassador also highlighted India’s rapid economic transformation, social progress, and the expanding India–US partnership .
The Chicago installation follows another landmark tribute unveiled in April at Seattle’s Westlake Square. The life-size bronze statue there became the first installation of Vivekananda to be hosted by a city government anywhere in the United States. The monument was unveiled by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and Consul General of India Prakash Gupta, and was gifted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) as part of India’s broader cultural diplomacy initiative. Sculpted by noted Indian artist Naresh Kumar Kumawat , whose works are displayed in more than 80 countries, the Seattle monument stands in one of the city’s busiest public spaces, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and symbolising India’s growing soft power and people-to-people ties with the US.
