Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye struck once each as Switzerland produced a composed display to defeat Algeria 2-0 and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 , keeping alive their hopes of making a deep run in the tournament.

The victory in Vancouver ensured Switzerland progressed comfortably to the knockout stage, where they will face the winner of the Colombia vs Ghana clash. That Round of 16 encounter is scheduled to be played next Tuesday in Vancouver.

Switzerland entered the contest knowing a win would guarantee progression, and the European side delivered when it mattered most. Breel Embolo opened the scoring to put the Swiss in control before Dan Ndoye added another goal to seal a convincing victory and extinguish Algeria's hopes of advancing.

The result marks another successful group stage campaign for Switzerland, who have now reached the knockout rounds in successive World Cups. However, the team will be eager to rewrite history, having struggled to move beyond this stage in recent editions of the tournament.

Despite regularly qualifying for the last 16, Switzerland have not won a World Cup knockout match since 1938 , when the tournament was held in France. Their best post-war World Cup run came in 1954 , when they won a playoff match to reach the quarterfinals. Since then, knockout success has remained elusive, making this year's campaign an opportunity to end a decades long wait.

For Algeria , the defeat brought an end to an encouraging return to the World Cup after a 12 year absence. The North African nation was making its first appearance at the global showpiece since 2014 , when it impressed by reaching the Round of 16 before bowing out against eventual champions Germany .

Although Algeria showed determination throughout the group stage, they were unable to break down an organised Swiss defence or recover after conceding.

Switzerland will now shift its focus to the knockout phase, where tougher challenges await. With confidence growing and momentum on their side, the Swiss will hope this campaign finally delivers the breakthrough that has eluded them for nearly nine decades.
