Syria Appoints Final 70 Lawmakers, First Post-Assad Parliament to Convene on July 6
Syria has completed the formation of its first Parliament since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad , with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa appointing the final 70 members of the country's 210 member People's Assembly. The appointments complete the transitional legislature, which is expected to hold its inaugural session on July 6 , marking a major milestone in Syria's political transition after more than five decades of Assad family rule.
The final list released on Wednesday includes 15 women , bringing the total number of female lawmakers in Parliament to 22 , according to Syrian authorities. It also includes 13 former political prisoners who were detained under the Assad government, underscoring the symbolic shift from the previous regime. Two representatives from the predominantly Druze province of Sweida were also appointed despite elections not yet being held there.
According to Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad , head of Syria's electoral committee, lawmakers will be sworn in during Monday's first session before electing the Parliament's presidential council, or speaker and leadership bureau. The Assembly is also expected to begin forming parliamentary committees and start legislative work.
The newly formed Parliament will serve a 30 month transitional term. Its primary responsibilities include drafting a new elections law , preparing the legal framework for future nationwide elections, and supporting Syria's broader political transition as the country continues rebuilding after a civil war that claimed about 500,000 lives .
The parliamentary process began in October 2025 , when Syria conducted the first phase of elections. However, voting excluded the southern province of Sweida , where Druze armed groups opposed to the central government remained in control, as well as northeast Syria, which was then administered by Kurdish authorities.
Elections in northeast Syria were eventually held in May 2026 after government forces regained control of the region following deadly clashes earlier this year. Although no election date has yet been announced for Sweida, the interim president appointed two representatives from the province to ensure its inclusion in the new legislature.
The final 70 appointments complete the 210 member Assembly after the remaining lawmakers were selected through regional electoral bodies during previous phases of the transition. Despite the formation of Parliament, Syria will continue operating under a temporary constitutional framework , with the transitional legislature holding more limited powers while the country remains under a presidential system during the transition.
Syria has been without a functioning Parliament since the December 2024 insurgent offensive led by al-Sharaa's now dissolved Hayat Tahrir al-Sham movement ended the Assad family's decades long rule. The creation of the new legislature is being viewed as an important step toward restoring state institutions and preparing the country for future elections.
