Syria Prison Riot And Fire In Kobani Kills At Least 7 Amid Kurdish Arab Tensions

A prison riot and fire in Kobani, a predominantly Kurdish town in northern Syria, killed at least seven people on Saturday, September 12, as tensions between Kurds and Arabs continued to escalate after deadly violence a day earlier. Syrian state media reported the deaths, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) gave a higher toll of eight prisoners killed and around 20 injured.

The Syrian state news agency SANA said the fire began after inmates at Kobani prison rioted amid tensions that erupted in the town on Friday. SOHR said the unrest was linked to plans to transfer some prisoners to a facility in Aleppo. Reports also said inmates barricaded themselves inside parts of the prison and damaged several doors before the fire broke out.

The prison remains under the control of Kurdish forces even though Syrian government troops have recently entered Kobani, which lies along the border with Türkiye. The conflicting casualty figures could change as authorities assess the aftermath.

The prison violence followed unrest in Kobani on Friday after Kurds blamed Arabs for the killing of a Kurdish man. The incident triggered protests and heightened tensions between the Kurdish minority and Syria's central government.

The latest violence comes as Damascus seeks to extend its authority over northeastern Syria, an area previously administered by the Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In late August, the SDF commander announced the group's official dissolution after years of controlling a de facto autonomous region.

Kobani has major significance in Syria's conflict. The city was besieged by Islamic State militants about a decade ago and later became a key base for the US backed Kurdish offensive that helped end the group's territorial control in Syria in 2019.

The latest prison incident also adds to a troubled history of detention facilities in the Kobani area. The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported in February that 21 prisoners were killed at a separate detention facility near Kobani between January 19 and 22, 2026. That incident was separate from Saturday's prison fire.
