Veteran Tamil music composer and singer Deva, celebrated for bringing Chennai’s distinctive gaana music into mainstream cinema, died at a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday, October 17. He was 75. His death has prompted tributes from leading film personalities and political figures, with audiences remembering his memorable songs and iconic background scores.

Born Devanesan Chokkalingam, Deva was popularly known as Thenisai Thendral, meaning the breeze of sweet music. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he composed music for more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, carving out a distinctive identity with his energetic compositions and earthy musical style.

Deva’s contribution to Tamil cinema extended beyond chartbusters. His music helped bring gaana, a popular Chennai-based folk music tradition associated with working-class communities and urban youth, to a wider audience. His compositions captured the everyday experiences, humour and spirit of ordinary people, making the genre an enduring part of Tamil film music.

Among his most celebrated works were Rajinikanth-starrers 'Annamalai' (1992) and 'Baasha' (1995), both directed by Suresh Krissna. The pulsating 'Baasha' theme music became particularly memorable, complementing Rajinikanth’s screen persona. Deva also composed for Kamal Haasan’s 'Pammal K Sambandam' and 'Panchathanthiram', both released in 2002.

His background score for comedian Goundamani’s antics in 'Sooriyan' (1992) remained another fan favourite. The comic sequence’s music continued to entertain audiences at Deva’s concerts decades after the film’s release. The composer was also known for his trademark white pyjama-kurta and white sandals, reportedly inspired by Rajinikanth.

Following his demise, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Khushbu Sundar and several other personalities expressed grief. Rajinikanth visited Deva’s residence in Chennai to pay his last respects, while members of the film fraternity remembered the composer’s warmth and lasting contribution to cinema.

Deva’s son, Srikanth Deva, is also an established music director. The veteran composer leaves behind a vast musical catalogue that continues to connect generations of listeners through its melodies, rhythms and distinctive gaana sound.
