The Government of Tamil Nadu has reinforced its directive on the legal drinking age , instructing all licensed alcohol vendors to strictly ensure that no liquor is sold or served to anyone below 21 years of age .

In a statement issued by the Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise , authorities made it clear that staff at all licensed premises must confirm age through valid government-issued identification whenever a customer’s eligibility is in doubt before providing alcohol service.

The order applies to FL2 (clubs) and FL3 (hotels) establishments across the state and reiterates that all provisions under the Tamil Nadu Liquor (Licence and Permit) Rules, 1981 must be followed in full compliance.

Officials further directed club authorities operating under FL2 licences to issue membership identity cards to registered patrons. Liquor service, they said, should be limited strictly to members and eligible guests in line with licensing norms.

The directive also stresses that all licensed outlets must adhere to designated operating hours without exception, warning that any deviation will invite regulatory action.

Authorities additionally reminded clubs that serving alcohol is only one part of their permitted functions. Managements have been urged to actively maintain recreational, cultural, sports, and social activities within their premises.

The government has stated that enforcement will be strict , and any violation of these conditions will result in action against licence holders. The move is aimed at strengthening compliance and promoting responsible alcohol service across the state.
