The Tamil Nadu government will organise a large-scale public awareness event titled “Start Run, Stop Drugs” in Chennai on June 26 as part of its ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles among young people.

The event, being conducted under the aegis of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) , coincides with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and seeks to use sports as a powerful tool to steer youth away from narcotics and other harmful substances.

According to an official release, the initiative aims to channel the energy of young people into constructive activities while fostering a culture of fitness, discipline, and social responsibility. The programme reflects the state government's broader anti-drug campaign, which emphasises prevention, awareness, and community engagement alongside enforcement measures.

The six-kilometre run will begin at 6 a.m. from the Anna Memorial on Kamaraj Salai and conclude at Island Grounds . Organisers expect participation from more than 10,000 people , including students, athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and members of the general public.

Officials said the event is designed to encourage collective action against drug abuse by bringing together citizens from different walks of life. By promoting mass participation, the government hopes to strengthen public awareness about the social and health consequences of substance abuse while inspiring young people to adopt positive lifestyle choices.

The run is open to individuals aged 14 years and above , with online registrations available until June 22 through the SDAT portal.

The initiative underscores Tamil Nadu's commitment to combining sports, community participation, and public outreach in its efforts to build a healthier and drug-free society.
