Tamil to Hindi, Hindi to Tamil: Governor Calls for Cross-Regional Language Learning
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has called for greater emphasis on multilingualism and cross-cultural language learning , stating that people from different regions should learn each other’s languages to strengthen national unity and cultural understanding.
Addressing the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 – 2025 felicitation ceremony at Bharathiar Mandapam in Lok Bhavan, Arlekar suggested that individuals in North India should learn at least one South Indian language, such as Tamil, while people in South India should learn a North Indian language. He said language should be viewed not merely as a means of communication but as a powerful bridge connecting diverse communities .
Questioning the difficulty in adopting another Indian language, the Governor stressed that linguistic exchange can help deepen cultural relationships and promote a stronger sense of shared identity among citizens. According to him, learning different languages allows people to better understand regional histories, traditions, and cultural values.
Highlighting the significance of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam initiative , Arlekar said the programme reflects the vision of preserving India’s cultural diversity while promoting national integration. He noted that more than 7,000 participants have travelled to Kashi through the initiative, experiencing the historic spiritual and cultural links between Kashi Vishwanath and Rameswaram .
The Governor also recalled his experiences during his tenure as Himachal Pradesh Governor, where he met Tamil families who had settled in Kashi for generations. He pointed out that their ability to speak Hindi fluently while maintaining their Tamil heritage demonstrated the possibilities of cultural coexistence and regional harmony.
The event included the felicitation of competition winners, jury members, and organisers associated with Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0. Senior dignitaries, including Sajjansingh R Chavan, Secretary to the Governor, and Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras , were present.
The Governor’s remarks come amid wider discussions on India’s linguistic diversity, where promoting multilingual education is increasingly being viewed as a tool for improving cultural exchange, social cohesion, and national integration while respecting the country’s varied regional identities.
