
Tata Power Commissions 100-MW Solar Project in Tamil Nadu, Crosses 7-GW Renewable Capacity Mark
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has commissioned a 100-MW group captive solar project at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, strengthening the Tata Group’s clean-energy transition. The project lifts TPREL’s utility renewable-energy portfolio to 12.3 GW and pushes its operational capacity beyond the 7-GW milestone. Its operational fleet comprises more than 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind, with another 5.3 GW under development.
The captive plant will supply 40.625 MW to TP Solar, Tata Power’s solar-cell and module manufacturing arm; 53.125 MW to Tata Electronics, which focuses on semiconductors, precision engineering and advanced electronics; and 6.25 MW to Tata Realty and Infrastructure. The arrangement connects renewable generation with the group’s electricity needs, helping businesses reduce carbon intensity and secure green power.
The project is designed to generate 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually and offset about 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Electricity will be transmitted through the Kayathar 400-kV Grid Substation, enabling delivery to the three beneficiary companies.
A major technology highlight is the first-of-its-kind deployment of Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology in India for a Tata project. The system tracks the sun while accommodating varied terrain, potentially improving energy capture and reducing extensive land levelling. The plant uses 2,61,660 Mono PERC bifacial modules, combining tracking with panels that can capture light from both sides.
For India, it shows how terrain-adaptive tracking and captive generation can support efficient utility-scale solar. For Tata, it links clean electricity with manufacturing and infrastructure operations. It also demonstrates how captive power can align industrial growth with group-wide decarbonisation goals.
TPREL’s growth pipeline further underscores the scale of its transition. Of the 5.3 GW under development, 2.2 GW is solar and 3.1 GW is wind, with phased commissioning planned over six to 24 months. The Kayathar project therefore represents not merely 100 MW of added capacity, but another link between Tata’s renewable generation capabilities and its expanding low-carbon business ecosystem.
