Taxpayers beware: I-T dept clarifies false ‘significant transaction’ emails

The Income Tax department on Saturday urged taxpayers to ignore emails alerting them about 'significant transactions' as part of the ongoing Advance Tax e-Campaign for the Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26).

In a statement posted on X , the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) clarified that some taxpayers had received emails containing inaccurate details of transactions. These emails, it said, were sent in error and did not reflect actual transaction data.

"We are actively working to resolve this issue with our service provider," the CBDT said, urging taxpayers to disregard the earlier communication related to the e-Campaign.

March 15 marks the last date for payment of the fourth installment of advance tax for the current fiscal. The CBDT emphasized that its email alerts are intended only as facilitative reminders , helping taxpayers review financial data on the Compliance Portal and ensure timely advance tax compliance.

Taxpayers are advised to verify their own transaction details through the e-Campaign tab on the Compliance Portal, accessible via the e-Filing portal , rather than relying solely on the emailed alerts.

The department’s timely clarification aims to prevent confusion or unnecessary panic among taxpayers as the deadline for advance tax payment approaches.
