TDP Candidates File Nominations for Three Rajya Sabha Seats

The process for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh gathered momentum on Monday, with three candidates nominated by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) formally filing their nomination papers.

The party's nominees Sana Satish Babu , Bhashyam Ramakrishna , and Chintakayala Vijay submitted their nominations to Returning Officer Vanitha Rani at the State Assembly. Their candidature comes as part of the ruling NDA alliance's seat-sharing arrangement for the four Rajya Sabha vacancies from Andhra Pradesh.

Under the agreement between the alliance partners, the TDP is contesting three seats, while its ally Jana Sena Party has fielded Lingamaneni Ramesh for the remaining berth. With the alliance enjoying a commanding majority in the Assembly, all four candidates are expected to have a smooth path to election.

The vacancies have arisen due to the retirement of four sitting Rajya Sabha members A. Ayodhya Rami Reddy , Parimal Nathwani , Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose , and Sana Satish Babu . While three of the outgoing members are from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) , Satish Babu has been renominated and is seeking another term in the Upper House.

The election, scheduled for June 18 , is likely to reshape Andhra Pradesh's representation in Parliament. At present, the YSRCP holds seven Rajya Sabha seats, while the TDP has two. The latest contest is expected to strengthen the NDA's presence in the Upper House following its sweeping victory in the 2024 Assembly elections.

The ruling coalition enjoys a significant numerical advantage in the Assembly, with the TDP holding 135 MLAs , Jana Sena 21 , and the BJP eight . In comparison, the YSRCP's strength has been reduced to just 11 legislators , making the outcome of the Rajya Sabha election largely a formality.

Political observers see the nominations as another step in the NDA government's efforts to consolidate its influence both in Andhra Pradesh and at the national level through stronger representation in Parliament.
