Telangana Assembly Session Adjourned After Eight Days, Four Bills Passed

The Telangana Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Friday after an eight-day session that saw the passage of four Bills, discussions on key policy issues and repeated protests by the opposition BRS. The session was held from September 7 to 18, with the House conducting business for 51 hours and 52 minutes, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar said.

The Assembly passed four Bills: the Core Urban Region Integrated Governance (CURE) Bill, Municipalities Amendment Bill, Panchayat Raj Act Amendment Bill and Jan Vishwas Bill.

The House also took up short-duration discussions on four important issues, including shortcomings in the Dharani portal, changing weather patterns and the impact of El Niño, improving educational standards and new education initiatives for students. Members also discussed the demand for separate enumeration of the Backward Classes population in the 2027 national census.

The CURE Bill seeks to replace the 1955 GHMC Act and establish a new framework for integrated development and governance of Hyderabad. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addressed the House at length on several issues during the session.

According to the Speaker, members received oral replies to 50 starred questions and raised 86 supplementary questions. A total of 105 members participated in the proceedings.

The session was also marked by political confrontations between the ruling party and the BRS. On the opening day, BRS MLAs and MLCs attempted to enter the Assembly wearing black T-shirts carrying slogans against the government, but were stopped by police.

The ruling side alleged that BRS MLCs Tata Madhu and Naveen Kumar Reddy made objectionable remarks against the Speaker. On the second day, BRS members protested near the Speaker's podium over alleged objectionable remarks against party leader K Chandrasekhar Rao by a Shadnagar MLA.

Despite appeals from Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, the protests continued. The Speaker subsequently suspended 22 BRS MLAs for the remainder of the session.
