Telangana Begins Search for New Chief Secretary as Ramakrishna Rao’s Term Ends
Uncertainty surrounding the appointment of Telangana’s next Chief Secretary (CS) has sparked intense discussion within administrative circles, with the tenure of incumbent K. Ramakrishna Rao set to end later this month.
Ramakrishna Rao, who has already been granted two extensions during his tenure, is scheduled to retire at the end of June. As a result, attention has shifted to whether the government will seek another extension through the Centre or appoint a new officer to lead the state bureaucracy.
While no official announcement has been made, officials familiar with the developments indicate that the possibility of a third extension is being viewed as unlikely. Such a move would be considered unusual, prompting the government to focus more seriously on identifying a successor. Consequently, the process of evaluating potential candidates for the state’s top administrative post has reportedly gathered pace.
Several senior IAS officers have emerged as frontrunners in the race. Among the names being discussed are Jayesh Ranjan, Vikas Raj, Sanjay Jaju and Sabyasachi Ghosh . Of these, Jayesh Ranjan is said to be receiving considerable attention due to his extensive experience in key sectors such as information technology, industries, investment promotion and urban development . His administrative track record is seen as a major advantage in the selection process.
Vikas Raj is also considered a strong contender and is believed to be among the leading candidates for the position. The remaining officers under consideration have likewise held significant responsibilities and are regarded as capable administrators.
The appointment is considered crucial because the Chief Secretary serves as the highest-ranking civil servant in the state government , overseeing coordination among departments and ensuring effective implementation of government policies.
However, the final decision rests with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Officials expect clarity on the matter during the last week of June , when the government is likely to announce whether it will continue with the incumbent or usher in a new administrative leadership at the Secretariat.
