In a significant move aimed at strengthening grassroots childcare services and expanding employment opportunities for women, the Telangana Government has approved the recruitment of 15,982 vacancies in Anganwadi centres across the state.

The large-scale hiring initiative, one of the biggest recruitment drives in the state's welfare sector in recent years, is being undertaken under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy . The appointments are expected to address long-pending staff shortages while improving the delivery of nutrition, healthcare and preschool education services for children and mothers.

According to official figures, the vacancies include 3,100 Anganwadi Teacher posts and 12,882 Anganwadi Assistant posts . The recruitment will be carried out across all districts in a phased manner, with 9,590 posts falling under Multi Zone-I and 6,392 posts under Multi Zone-II. Notifications have already been issued in Peddapalli and Mahabubnagar districts, while announcements for the remaining districts are expected shortly.

The government has also introduced important reforms to the selection process. For the first time, Intermediate education has been made mandatory for Anganwadi Teacher positions. Authorities have additionally incorporated interviews and a merit-based weightage system to ensure transparency and improve the quality of appointments. The revised recruitment framework has been formalised through G.O. Nos. 4 and 6 .

Officials said the new guidelines were developed after studying recruitment models and service rules followed in other states. Candidates must be between 18 and 35 years of age , while preference will be given to local applicants. To strengthen community participation, candidates are required to belong to the same village or ward where the Anganwadi centre is located.

The recruitment drive comes at a crucial time for Telangana's child welfare ecosystem. The state operates nearly 36,000 Anganwadi centres under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme, serving children below six years of age, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Over the years, vacancies caused by retirements, promotions and staff movement have increased the workload on existing workers, prompting calls for fresh recruitment.

Beyond filling vacancies, the government is also working to modernise Anganwadi infrastructure by improving access to drinking water, sanitation facilities, electricity and digital learning tools. Experts believe that strengthening human resources at the grassroots level will play a vital role in improving early childhood education, maternal health and nutritional outcomes .

Among the districts, Bhadradri Kothagudem has reported the highest number of vacancies, followed by Nalgonda, Adilabad, Khammam and Ranga Reddy . With nearly 16,000 positions set to be filled, the recruitment campaign is expected to provide a major employment boost for women while enhancing the effectiveness of Telangana's welfare delivery system.
