Telangana HC Directs DGP to Identify Cops Accused of Misbehaving with Women MLAs

The Telangana High Court has directed Director General of Police CV Anand to identify the police personnel allegedly involved in the misconduct with women BRS MLAs during a protest outside the Assembly gates on the opening day of the Telangana Assembly session. The direction came while hearing a petition filed by the BRS women legislators, who alleged that police personnel behaved improperly with them during the protest. The BRS legal team disclosed details of the court’s direction.

The women MLAs had approached the High Court seeking action over the alleged conduct of police personnel while they were staging a demonstration near the Assembly gates. After taking up the petition, the court directed the DGP to establish the identities of the officers allegedly involved in the incident.

The allegations relate to the events that unfolded when the BRS legislators gathered outside the Assembly as the session began. The petitioners maintained that they were subjected to inappropriate treatment by the police while attempting to stage their protest. The court’s direction is focused on identifying the personnel against whom the allegations have been made.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy strongly criticised the BRS over its conduct during the Assembly session. He alleged that the opposition party was attempting to disrupt the proceedings to prevent discussions on several issues concerning its previous tenure in government.

The Chief Minister said respecting the Speaker was an established parliamentary tradition and stressed that the Speaker had a responsibility to safeguard the rights of all members. He also pointed out that the previous BRS government had framed certain rules governing the functioning of the Assembly.

Revanth Reddy further alleged that BRS members made inappropriate remarks against the Speaker, argued with police personnel and staged a protest involving the removal of clothing. He said the Speaker initially gave them an opportunity to return to the House after apologising and participate in discussions on public issues.
