Telangana Prepares Action Plan to Tackle El Niño Impact Through June: CM Revanth Reddy
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan through June next year to address the possible impact of El Niño on drinking water, irrigation, agriculture and electricity supply. He stressed the need to identify potential risks early and implement preventive measures to minimise disruptions across essential sectors.
During a review meeting with officials, the Chief Minister warned that El Niño could trigger serious challenges in the coming months, requiring advance planning and coordinated efforts across government departments. He asked officials to assess possible shortages and develop strategies to ensure the availability of essential resources.
Power supply emerged as a key concern, with Revanth Reddy cautioning that electricity shortages could intensify. He said the government was prepared to spend whatever was necessary to purchase power if required. However, he expressed concern over the possibility that electricity might not be readily available in the market, making conservation increasingly important.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to promote the efficient use of available electricity and explore measures to temporarily defer power-intensive activities wherever feasible. He emphasised that responsible consumption would be essential if the state faced supply constraints.
Drawing parallels with the government's response to the COVID-19 crisis, Revanth Reddy called for a robust, coordinated action plan to manage the potential consequences of El Niño. He said public participation must be central to every initiative and asked officials to involve communities in conservation efforts.
To improve awareness, he proposed using films, media platforms, cultural performances and other communication channels to explain the possible impact of El Niño and the importance of conserving water and electricity. Officials were directed to organise awareness campaigns from the village level to the state level.
Water management will also be a major priority. The Chief Minister instructed departments to take advance measures to prevent drinking water shortages and strengthen conservation efforts to avoid wastage. He emphasised that not a single drop of water should be wasted.
The government aims to prepare for potential climate-related challenges through coordinated planning, responsible resource use and public awareness, ensuring that essential services remain available during the coming months.
