The Telangana Prisons Department has launched a special initiative titled ‘Ullasam’ to improve the mental health and emotional well-being of inmates in prisons across the state. The programme was inaugurated on Monday at the Chanchalguda Central Prison and the Women’s Special Prison in Hyderabad, with a focus on addressing psychological distress through sports, recreational activities and group engagement.

According to an official statement, the initiative aims to reduce mental stress, depression, negative thoughts and suicidal tendencies among prisoners. The department has designed the programme to provide inmates with opportunities to engage in physical activities and recreational games, helping them manage emotional challenges and maintain a positive outlook during their period of incarceration.

The initiative was conceptualised by Soumya Mishra, Director General of Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services, who formally launched the activities at both prison facilities. She encouraged inmates to participate actively and highlighted the importance of recreational programmes in improving their overall well-being. Such activities can help prisoners cope with stress, strengthen their mental health and contribute to creating a more positive atmosphere within correctional institutions.

The programme includes a range of indoor and outdoor games tailored to the interests and requirements of inmates. Male prisoners will take part in volleyball, tug of war, throwball, badminton and tennikoit. Indoor recreational options such as carroms, chess and other board games have also been included to encourage participation.

Women inmates will have access to a different set of activities, including puzzle games, musical chairs, lemon-and-spoon competitions, balloon games, running races, badminton, chess, dodgeball and carroms. These activities are intended to combine recreation with opportunities for social interaction and collective participation.

The department is making arrangements to ensure that every inmate gets an opportunity to participate, irrespective of age or physical ability. Games are being selected based on individual health conditions, age and personal capabilities to make the initiative inclusive.
