Telangana Pushes Green Mobility: Government Vehicles to Go Fully Electric

The Telangana government has taken a major step toward cleaner transportation by deciding that all future vehicle purchases by government departments must be electric vehicles (EVs) . Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy issued the directive during a high-level review meeting with officials from the Transport Department and the Roads and Buildings Department , highlighting the urgent need to reduce vehicle pollution and protect the environment.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed that governments must set an example when it comes to adopting environment-friendly policies . With vehicular emissions increasingly becoming a major contributor to urban pollution, particularly in Hyderabad , the state administration wants its own vehicle fleet to transition toward clean energy mobility . Officials said that under the new policy, any vehicle purchased in the future for official government work will have to be an electric vehicle , replacing conventional petrol or diesel vehicles.

The Chief Minister also extended the directive to vehicles hired for official duties within Hyderabad. He made it clear that vehicles rented for government work in the Core Urban Region (CURE) of the city must also be electric vehicles . Authorities believe that this move will significantly help reduce urban air pollution and encourage wider adoption of EV technology across the city.

Apart from environmental concerns, road safety was another major topic of discussion in the review meeting. The Chief Minister directed officials to strengthen public awareness campaigns to reduce road accidents. He instructed departments to produce short road-safety awareness films and ensure they are widely broadcast through television, social media platforms, and public display systems so that drivers and pedestrians become more conscious of safe road practices.

The government is also planning improvements in the state’s transport infrastructure . Officials have been asked to prepare proposals for establishing a modern bus terminal near Shamshabad , which would be linked to a proposed high-speed rail corridor . The project is expected to improve passenger facilities and create better connectivity between Hyderabad and other regions.

Looking further ahead, the state government is exploring the possibility of developing high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Pune, Bengaluru, and Chennai . If these projects move forward, Hyderabad could become a key transportation hub in southern India with faster inter-city travel options.

Officials believe that these initiatives including the adoption of electric vehicles, stronger road safety awareness, and upgraded transport infrastructure will help Telangana move toward sustainable urban development while positioning the state as a leader in green mobility initiatives in India.
