Telangana Raises Retirement Age of Judicial Officers to 62 Years
The Telangana Government has promulgated Ordinance No. 1 of 2026, published in the Telangana Gazette on 31 October 2026, enhancing the retirement age of members of the Telangana State Higher Judicial Service and Telangana State Judicial Service from 61 to 62 years.
The decision follows the Supreme Court's consideration of the retirement age of judicial officers and the Telangana High Court Full Court's recommendation dated 19 August 2026. The amendment aims to retain experienced judicial officers and strengthen the administration of justice.
The Ordinance gives retrospective effect to the enhancement from 31 March 2026. It also provides an option for judicial officers who retired on or after that date but before publication of the Ordinance to rejoin service, subject to eligibility, assessment of suitability and performance by the High Court, and other prescribed conditions.
Officers opting to rejoin are required to surrender post-retirement benefits already received. On reappointment, they are entitled to consequential benefits relating to pay, seniority and continuity of service, subject to applicable rules.
The amendment is limited to the specified judicial services. It does not apply to other Telangana Government employees, High Court judges or Supreme Court judges, whose retirement ages are governed by separate constitutional provisions.
The Ordinance marks an important change in the service conditions of Telangana's subordinate judiciary, with the objective of retaining judicial experience and ensuring continuity in the justice delivery system.
