Temples, Mosques, Gurudwaras Unite to Support Jharkhand Students’ Exam Reform Protest

The ongoing student agitation in Jharkhand against alleged examination irregularities has received support from communities across religious lines, with temples, mosques, gurudwaras and local residents providing food and essential supplies to thousands of protesters camping in the state capital.

The protest, which has continued for 13 days at Jaipal Singh Stadium in Ranchi, has been demanding major reforms in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Six protesters remain on an indefinite hunger strike as the agitation continues despite heavy rainfall in the city.

Community kitchens have become a key feature of the protest site, with volunteers preparing and distributing meals without any distinction of religion, caste, or background. Students said they have received food from Shani Temple, Pahadi Temple, nearby mosques and gurudwaras, while families from different districts have also sent home-cooked meals for the demonstrators.

“We are not Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs or Christians. We are students seeking justice and reforms,” said a protester, highlighting the movement’s focus on transparency in recruitment rather than social or political divisions.

The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch, which is leading the protest, has introduced a code of conduct to maintain discipline at the demonstration. The guidelines prohibit political, religious or caste-based remarks and instruct participants to avoid abusive language, keeping the movement focused on its core demands.

The protesters are seeking the cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand PSC Civil Services Examination and an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment process. They have demanded a probe either by the CBI or a panel of retired High Court judges from outside the state.

Students said the support from people belonging to different communities has strengthened their resolve to continue the agitation. Protesters maintained that the movement will continue until they receive concrete assurances on recruitment reforms and a fair examination system.
