Thailand School Shooting Leaves 8 Dead, 22 Injured, Teen Gunman Dies

At least eight people were killed after a teenage student opened fire at a high school in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province on Friday, in one of the country’s latest deadly shooting incidents, authorities said.

The shooting took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located northwest of Bangkok. Police and emergency teams rushed to the school after reports of gunfire, while students reportedly locked themselves inside classrooms for safety.

Authorities identified the suspected shooter as a 14-year-old student at the school. Investigators said he had earlier shot his grandparents at their home before travelling to the school. The two grandparents were among those killed.

Six people were killed at the school, including three teachers and three students, according to initial information released by authorities. The teenager later turned the gun on himself and died in hospital.

The number of injured remained subject to differing official figures. Reuters reported that at least 15 people were wounded in the school attack, while Thailand’s Health Minister Pattana Promphat said 22 people were injured, including nine who were in critical condition. Authorities were continuing to verify the casualty figures.

Investigators believe the handgun used in the attack belonged to the teenager’s grandfather. Police said the student fired at least 26 rounds at the school.

A motive for the shooting has not yet been established, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The incident comes months after another school shooting in southern Thailand. In February, a 17-year-old reportedly stole a firearm from police and opened fire at a public high school, briefly taking people hostage. That attack left one person dead and two others injured.

The latest shooting has renewed concerns over gun violence and firearm access among young people in Thailand, where authorities have previously faced challenges linked to illegal and poorly secured weapons.
