Thalapathy Swag In London: Huge Crowd Gathers For Vijay, Event Cancelled Over Safety Concerns

Hundreds of fans who gathered outside London’s iconic The Shard hoping to catch a glimpse of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay were left disappointed after his planned public appearance was cancelled following safety concerns raised by the Metropolitan Police.

Fans gathered outside the landmark on Tuesday, with some reportedly waiting for hours. A section of supporters had also been camping outside Vijay’s hotel in the hope of seeing the actor-turned-politician during his UK visit.

The cancellation was announced by a member of Vijay’s team over a loudspeaker. The team said the programme was being called off in the interest of public safety as the organisers did not have the required permission for the gathering.

The decision brought the event to an abrupt end, leaving supporters disappointed after spending hours waiting for the chief minister. The large turnout had raised concerns about crowd management at the busy central London location.

Following the cancellation, TVK urged the Tamil diaspora in London not to gather outside Vijay’s hotel or along his travel routes in an attempt to meet him. The appeal came amid concerns over managing crowds and ensuring safety during the chief minister’s public movements in the city.

The episode came during Vijay’s UK visit, where he was leading a Tamil Nadu government delegation on an investment outreach mission. The objective was to attract fresh investments and strengthen the state’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing, technology and high-value industries.

According to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office, the delegation secured multiple memoranda of understanding involving investment commitments of around Rs 12,300 crore during the visit. The projects are expected to create more than 9,400 high-value jobs across the state.

The investment drive is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader effort to attract global companies and expand its manufacturing and technology ecosystem, while creating employment opportunities through new industrial and business projects.

The London gathering was not part of the investment meetings, but the cancellation highlighted the challenge of managing public appearances involving Vijay, who has a large following from his years as a leading Tamil film actor.

The development came as Vijay’s investment-focused overseas tour drew to a close.
