A 37-year-old woman from Thane was allegedly cheated of Rs 10 lakh after three persons promised to secure her a government job through purported official connections, police said on Wednesday.

According to the Kapurbawdi police , the alleged fraud took place between June 25 and December 25 last year . The accused have been identified as Satish Wankhede, Rajguru Saheb, and Kamble .

As per the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly convinced the woman that Wankhede was a senior government official capable of arranging a government appointment. Believing their claims, the woman handed over Rs 10 lakh in exchange for the promised job.

However, despite repeated follow-ups, the woman neither received the promised employment nor was her money returned. Realising she had allegedly been defrauded, she approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case against the three accused and launched an investigation.

Officials said the probe is underway to ascertain the circumstances of the alleged fraud and determine whether the accused targeted other job seekers using a similar modus operandi.

Cases involving fake promises of government jobs continue to surface across the country, with fraudsters often exploiting aspirants by claiming they have influence within government departments. Authorities advise candidates to rely only on official recruitment notifications and selection processes , and to be wary of anyone demanding money in exchange for employment.
