‘The Odyssey’ Becomes Christopher Nolan’s Highest-Grossing Film As It Passes $1.1bn At Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed $1.1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of his career. The film has earned $1.104 billion globally, beating The Dark Knight Rises, which finished with $1.085 billion.

Released on July 17, The Odyssey has continued its strong run in theatres. It stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o also part of the cast.

The film has also made a big mark in India. The Odyssey has collected around ₹166.89 crore in India after 24 days, according to the latest trade figures. Its India gross is estimated to be around ₹181 crore, showing a steady run even in its fourth weekend.

The film has also created a new record for IMAX box office. It has earned around $289 million from IMAX screens worldwide, overtaking James Cameron’s Avatar, which earned about $271 million from IMAX during its lifetime.

The IMAX figure includes $147.3 million from North America and $141.8 million from international markets. Nolan shot the entire film with IMAX cameras, making the large-screen format a major part of its theatrical run.

The Odyssey opened at No. 1 worldwide and remained there for two straight weekends. It has also become the highest-grossing film for Damon, Hathaway and Pattinson.

The film reportedly had a $250 million production budget, before marketing costs. Its success has now helped Nolan’s films cross the $7 billion mark in worldwide box office earnings.

With the film still playing in theatres and more markets adding to its total, The Odyssey could push its worldwide collection even higher in the coming weeks. Its run has already given Nolan his biggest box-office hit and another major success on the big screen.
