The southwest monsoon intensified across northern India on Friday, bringing heavy rainfall that caused three rain-related deaths in Himachal Pradesh , widespread waterlogging, road blockages, and disruptions to power and water supply. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of northern India, especially eastern and southeastern Rajasthan, over the coming days.

In Himachal Pradesh , two people died due to electrocution in Kangra and Shimla, while another person died after falling in Mandi district. Heavy rain blocked 49 roads , disrupted three power transformers and 23 water supply schemes. Authorities reopened the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5) after clearing debris in Kinnaur, while 24 stranded pilgrims were rescued in Chamba after flash floods washed away a temporary bridge.

Rajasthan witnessed widespread rain, leading to severe waterlogging in several districts and flooding inside Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital , affecting emergency and diagnostic services. Roads were also blocked in parts of Chittorgarh following overnight showers.

In Uttar Pradesh , rainfall remained uneven despite recording above-normal rainfall on Friday, with the state still facing a 43 per cent cumulative rainfall deficit since June 1. Delhi experienced cloudy skies, light showers and high humidity, with the 'feels-like' temperature reaching 46.2°C despite a lower maximum temperature. Rain also affected the Amarnath Yatra base camps in Jammu and Kashmir, while Punjab and Haryana remained largely dry.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Centre is closely monitoring below-normal rainfall and potential drought conditions linked to the El Niño phenomenon and has directed concerned ministries to remain vigilant.

The IMD has urged authorities and residents to stay alert as the monsoon advances and more heavy rainfall is expected across parts of northern India.
