Three Shots Fired Outside Badminton Academy After Semi-Final Defeat

A franchise-based badminton tournament in Kurnool took a dramatic turn after a real estate businessman allegedly fired three rounds from his licensed .32 bore revolver outside a badminton academy, reportedly unable to cope with his team's semi-final defeat. Although no one was injured, the incident sparked panic among players and spectators, prompting swift police action and raising concerns over the irresponsible use of licensed firearms in public places.

The incident occurred after the semi-finals of the Kurnool Badminton Premier League (KBPL), a tournament that has been underway for the past four weeks with participation from multiple franchise teams. The Ananya franchise was eliminated from the competition, following which one of its team members, Kaushik, allegedly reacted in a fit of frustration.

According to police, Kaushik walked out of the badminton academy after the match, pulled out his licensed revolver, and fired three rounds into the ground. The gunshots sent players, officials, spectators and nearby residents into panic, with many rushing for safety. Police later confirmed that the bullets were fired into the ground and that no injuries or property damage were reported.

Speaking to the media, Kurnool DSP Raghavendra said there had been no argument, altercation or physical confrontation before the firing. Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused acted solely out of disappointment over his team's defeat. However, police said they are examining all aspects of the case before drawing final conclusions.

Officials said Kaushik possessed a valid arms licence, which had been issued several years ago for self-defence. They emphasised that holding a licence does not authorise the reckless use of a firearm in public. Such misuse may attract criminal charges under the Arms Act, 1959, besides cancellation of the licence.

Police have taken the accused into custody and initiated the process of seizing the revolver, which will be sent for forensic examination. Investigators are also analysing CCTV footage, eyewitness statements and other evidence to establish the sequence of events.

Authorities have decided to recommend cancellation of Kaushik's firearm licence. According to the DSP, Superintendent of Police Vikranth Patil will submit a formal proposal to District Collector A. Siri, the licensing authority, seeking revocation of the licence for its alleged misuse.

Police also clarified that Kaushik was a member of the Ananya franchise team and not its captain, dismissing speculation circulating after the incident. A case has been registered, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident has once again highlighted how competitive emotions in sport, if left unchecked, can escalate into actions that endanger public safety. Police urged licensed firearm holders to exercise responsibility, stressing that weapons issued for self-defence must never be used to express anger or frustration.
