Three Telugu OTT releases, one clear winner
The latest weekend on streaming platforms brought the digital premieres of three Telugu films. Expectations were fairly high, especially since OTT audiences often give films a second life after a weak theatrical run . However, the response this time has been uneven , with only one title managing to capture noticeable viewer attention.
The biggest surprise has been the muted reception for Bhartha Mahashyulaku Wignyapthi, featuring Ravi Teja . The film arrived on ZEE5 after a delayed digital release , and there was curiosity about whether it would finally find an audience online. In recent years, several Telugu films that struggled in theatres have gained traction once they reached streaming platforms. But that momentum has not materialised so far . The film’s OTT arrival has not triggered significant social media chatter , and viewer engagement appears limited at the moment.
A similar story is unfolding for Funky , starring Vishwak Sen and directed by Anudeep K. V.. The director usually enjoys strong OTT traction , largely because his style of humour often translates well into meme culture and online conversations. Even his earlier film Prince, which did not perform strongly in theatres, later found decent appreciation on streaming platforms . Surprisingly, Funky has not been able to recreate that pattern and has largely gone unnoticed on OTT .
In contrast, Couple Friendly , featuring Santosh Sobhan and Manasa Varanasi, is showing encouraging signs online . Though the film had only a moderate theatrical run despite positive reviews , its OTT response appears stronger. The film is reportedly gaining traction among Tamil audiences , particularly in Chennai, as the story is set in the city and connects well with viewers there.
Overall, it has turned out to be a mixed weekend for OTT releases . While two films are still waiting to spark audience curiosity, Couple Friendly seems to be slowly building momentum , proving once again that the digital space can sometimes offer a second chance for the right film .
