Three Women, Three Key Posts: Telangana Government’s BC Equation Gets a Fresh Look

The Telangana government has reshuffled the leadership of three important state institutions, appointing Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, Nerella Sharada and former Rajya Sabha member G. Sudha Rani to key positions. The appointments came shortly after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy moved to remove Minister Konda Surekha from the Cabinet, adding a political and social-equation dimension to the changes.

The appointments were formalised through Government Orders issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on Thursday, with Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju issuing the orders.

Vijayalakshmi Named Planning Board Vice-Chairperson

The government has appointed Gadwal Vijayalakshmi as Vice-Chairperson of the Telangana State Planning Board, replacing Dr G. Chinna Reddy, who was removed from the position.

The appointment was notified through GO Rt. No. 1289 and takes immediate effect. Vijayalakshmi has also been accorded the rank of Cabinet Minister. Before moving to the Planning Board, she served as Chairperson of the Telangana State Commission for Women and had earlier served as GHMC Mayor.

Vijayalakshmi is a BC leader from the Munnuru Kapu community, giving her elevation an added social-representation dimension.

Nerella Sharada to Lead Women’s Commission

Vijayalakshmi’s resignation from the Women’s Commission was accepted by the government following her new appointment. The government subsequently named Nerella Sharada as the new Chairperson of the commission through GO Rt. No. 1290.

Sharada’s appointment is effective immediately. She has been identified in political circles as a BC leader, although available reports do not establish her specific BC sub-caste.

Sudha Rani Appointed KUDA Chairperson

Former Rajya Sabha member G. Sudha Rani has been appointed Chairperson of the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) through GO Rt. No. 1291.

She will hold the post for two years from the date of assuming charge. The Metropolitan Area & Urban Development Department will issue separate orders covering the other terms and conditions of her appointment.

Sudha Rani is a BC leader from Warangal and belongs to the Padmasali community, the same community to which Konda Surekha belongs.

Appointments Draw Attention to BC Equation

The timing of the appointments has brought the BC representation and regional-equation angle into focus. With Surekha’s removal from the Cabinet preceding the reshuffle, the government has now given prominent responsibilities to three women, including two leaders identified with the BC community and a Padmasali leader from Warangal.

Sudha Rani’s appointment is particularly significant because of her Warangal connection and her Padmasali background. Some political observers view the appointments as an attempt to maintain the Congress’s connection with BC and Padmasali sections following Surekha’s exit.

However, the government has not officially linked the appointments to Surekha’s removal. The caste and regional-equation interpretation remains a political reading of the developments, rather than an officially stated reason.
