The crisis within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intensified on Friday after former West Bengal minister Jyoti Priya Mallick resigned from all party organisational posts , citing serious health issues, while senior leader Goutam Deb stepped down as mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation .

Mallick, a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee , said worsening kidney ailments and uncontrolled diabetes had made it impossible for him to continue his party responsibilities. His resignation comes days after he was inducted into the TMC's reconstituted working committee during a major organisational reshuffle.

A five-time MLA and former Food and Supplies Minister, Mallick suffered a political setback after losing the 2026 Assembly election from Habra to BJP's Debdas Mondal by over 31,000 votes. His career was further hit by his 2023 arrest in the alleged ration distribution scam. He was granted bail in January 2025 after spending nearly 15 months in jail.

Despite his resignation, Mallick said he remained loyal to Mamata Banerjee and declined to comment on the growing dissent within the party.

Meanwhile, Deb's resignation adds to a series of exits by senior TMC leaders from key administrative positions. Former Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim, Bidhannagar mayor Krishna Chakraborty and Gorkha Territorial Administration chief Anit Thapa have also stepped down in recent weeks.

The developments come amid mounting instability within the TMC following its electoral setbacks against the BJP in the 2026 Assembly and parliamentary polls. The party has since witnessed resignations, defections and internal rebellion, triggering political and legal disputes over leadership and legislative control.

Political observers view the latest resignations as further evidence of the deepest internal crisis in the TMC's nearly three-decade history .
