Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border in north Bengal on Monday in connection with an alleged extortion case , police said.

The arrest comes weeks after the Calcutta High Court withdrawal an interim protection order granted to Khan on May 26. Police had registered seven FIRs against him at the Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district , accusing him of extortion and other related offences.

While confirming the arrest, police did not disclose the exact location or circumstances under which Khan was apprehended. He is expected to be produced before a court following the completion of legal formalities.

Khan has been at the centre of a political and legal controversy in recent months. The allegations against him triggered a dispute within political circles, with opposition parties accusing the ruling TMC of shielding influential leaders facing criminal complaints. The TMC, however, has maintained that the law should take its course and that the allegations are subject to judicial scrutiny.

The controversy also spilled into the electoral arena during the Falta Assembly repoll held on May 21. Although Khan had announced the withdrawal of his candidature days before the election, his name remained in the fray, and he eventually finished fourth in the contest.

The case has drawn attention to the intersection of criminal allegations and electoral politics in West Bengal, with political rivals demanding a thorough investigation and accountability. Authorities have indicated that further legal proceedings will continue based on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
