Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran on Wednesday urged Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to take steps to reduce India’s dependence on synthetic and chemical fertilisers and encourage a shift towards sustainable agricultural inputs.

During a meeting held in New Delhi, Nagenthran called for greater policy focus on promoting traditional organic fertilisers and bio-fertilisers , stating that such measures are in the interest of farmers and long-term soil health.

In a post on X, he said he had submitted a formal request to the Union Minister, stressing the need to reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers and expand the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives in agriculture.

“I emphasised the need to reduce dependence on synthetic and chemical fertilisers in the interest of farmers and to promote wider adoption of traditional organic fertilisers and bio-fertilisers,” he said in the post.

He further urged the Centre to take proactive measures to ensure that sustainable agricultural inputs are not only promoted but also made more accessible and affordable to farmers across the country. According to him, improving availability and supply chains is essential for wider adoption at the grassroots level.

The meeting was also attended by BJP national secretary and Tamil Nadu in-charge Arvind Menon , party sources said.

The appeal comes amid growing policy discussions around sustainable farming practices and efforts to reduce input costs while improving soil fertility through organic and bio-based alternatives.
