Trade Reset on the Horizon? China and EU Plan Regular High Level Economic Talks

China and the European Union (EU) have agreed to institutionalise ministerial level trade and investment talks , marking a significant effort to strengthen economic engagement despite ongoing trade disputes and widening market imbalances. The new framework is expected to provide both sides with a regular platform to discuss trade, investment and broader economic issues while working to manage differences through dialogue.

According to China's Commerce Ministry , the newly established China EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism will bring together ministers once or twice every year. The initiative is designed to improve communication, promote practical cooperation and create a structured process for addressing trade related concerns as economic ties between the two sides continue to evolve.

As part of the new arrangement, China has invited EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to visit Beijing this autumn for the next round of discussions. The invitation follows talks in Brussels , where Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Šefčovič reviewed bilateral trade relations and explored ways to expand future cooperation.

The agreement comes at a time when trade tensions remain high. The European Union's trade deficit with China reached around 360 billion euros (about USD 410 billion) last year, reflecting Europe's concerns over the growing volume of Chinese exports entering its market. Products such as electric vehicles, batteries and manufactured goods have become key areas of concern for European policymakers.

Brussels has repeatedly called for a more balanced trading relationship and fair competition. After meeting Wang, Šefčovič said the EU must safeguard its industrial base while ensuring a level playing field for businesses. Reports suggest he is aiming for meaningful progress on trade rebalancing by October .

Despite these differences, China has emphasised the importance of continued cooperation. Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yadong said Beijing hopes to deepen collaboration with Europe in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and renewable energy , which are expected to drive future economic growth.

At the same time, new EU measures to protect the bloc's steel industry and tighten rules on low value e-commerce imports have added fresh pressure on Chinese exporters. Against this backdrop, the decision to establish regular ministerial consultations reflects both sides' recognition that sustained dialogue remains essential. As global supply chains face increasing uncertainty, the new mechanism could help manage disputes while opening new opportunities for cooperation in strategically important industries.
