Travel Smart, Travel Lite: IndiGo Unveils IndiGo Lite As New Entry Level Economy Fare In India
IndiGo , India's largest airline, has introduced a new entry level fare called IndiGo Lite , designed for economy passengers who travel without checked baggage. The airline said the offering lets travellers pay only for the services they actually use, positioning it as the lowest fare tier in its lineup, even more basic than the existing Saver fare.
Announced on Wednesday, bookings opened through IndiGo's direct channels, including its website , mobile application and contact centre , from July 1, with travel permitted from July 15 onward. IndiGo said it is the first Indian carrier to roll out unbundled basic economy fares across both its domestic and international network , branding the launch with the tagline "Travel smart, Travel Lite," aimed at flyers who "carry less, wait less, and do more."
The fare permits one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to 7 kg per flight, with no checked baggage included. Passengers can purchase add ons such as checked baggage, meals, priority boarding known as Fast Forward, and preferred seating through IndiGo's website or at the airport, up to one hour before departure. Lite bookings cannot be upgraded online to categories like Saver , FlexiPlus or IndiGo Stretch , though airport or in flight upgrades remain possible for a fare difference.
Notably, IndiGo Lite excludes infants , unaccompanied minors , and passengers booking under concessional categories such as student , senior citizen or armed forces fares , and is unavailable on connecting or code share flights and group or corporate bookings. Online check in opens 48 hours before domestic departure and 24 hours before international flights, with excess cabin or checked baggage attracting standard excess baggage charges.
The launch strengthens IndiGo's position as India's dominant carrier, which currently operates a fleet of over 440 aircraft , running more than 2,200 daily flights across 141 destinations , including 45 international routes.
The move follows Air India's own Basic fare , launched last month for domestic routes, priced Rs 300 to Rs 700 lower than standard fares for passengers willing to skip the complimentary onboard meal, while still retaining a 15 kg checked baggage allowance. Together, the two launches signal a broader shift among Indian carriers toward unbundled, a la carte pricing , as airlines compete more aggressively for cost conscious domestic and international travellers.
