Travelling to Singapore from India? Essential Travel Insurance Checks Before Departure

Indian travellers planning trips to Singapore should compare travel insurance policies by examining coverage limits, exclusions, deductibles and claim requirements, according to the PTI report. Travel insurance is generally not listed as mandatory for ordinary short-term visitors, though requirements can differ based on the purpose of travel and the visa or pass involved. Singapore currently requires foreign visitors to submit the SG Arrival Card with a health declaration within three days before arrival.

The report said travellers should examine medical coverage, including limits for hospitalisation, outpatient treatment, emergency treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation. Policies may also include deductibles or excess amounts, and travellers should check how these are applied to claims.

Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions requires attention. Such conditions may be excluded unless specifically covered under the policy or an applicable waiver. Travellers should disclose relevant conditions and check the insurer’s definition before purchasing a plan.

For baggage protection, policyholders should check limits for checked baggage, individual articles and valuables. They should also review the minimum delay period required for delayed-baggage benefits. In case of passport loss, check reimbursement limits, police-report requirements and documentation deadlines.

Travel disruption benefits are another area to examine. Trip-cancellation and curtailment cover generally applies only to specified insured events and may cover eligible non-refundable prepaid expenses. Travel-delay benefits can depend on minimum delay periods and defined causes.

Travellers should also note emergency-assistance procedures, including whether prior authorisation is needed before hospital admission, evacuation or treatment. Keeping the insurer’s 24-hour assistance contact details accessible can help during emergencies.

Before departure, travellers should understand the claim process and documents that may be required, including medical reports, bills, tickets, baggage irregularity reports, police reports and purchase receipts. Copies of important documents should be retained.

Policies contain exclusions that can affect claims, including self-inflicted injury, undisclosed pre-existing conditions, hazardous activities, war or civil unrest and intoxication-related events. Frequent travellers can compare single-trip and annual multi-trip plans, checking maximum trip duration and whether benefits apply separately to each journey.
