The Telangana government's decision to name a road near the US Consulate in Hyderabad after US President Donald Trump has sparked a sharp political controversy, drawing criticism from both the Left parties and the BJP. The proposed road, officially designated as "Donald Trump Avenue," is scheduled to be inaugurated on June 23 , but the move has quickly become a flashpoint in the state's political discourse.

Leading the criticism, CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby accused the Congress government of abandoning India's long-standing anti-imperialist traditions. He urged the Congress high command to intervene immediately and withdraw what he described as a controversial and inappropriate decision.

In a strongly worded social media post, Baby recalled how Kolkata's Harrington Street was renamed Ho Chi Minh Sarani during the Vietnam War era to honour the Vietnamese revolutionary leader. He argued that such decisions reflected India's solidarity with anti-colonial struggles, contrasting them with the Telangana government's move to honour a leader whom he described as a symbol of aggressive global power politics.

The CPI(M) leader further alleged that Trump represented policies associated with military interventions, sanctions, and geopolitical conflicts across different regions of the world. He said celebrating such a figure through a public landmark was inconsistent with India's historical commitment to sovereignty, peace, and anti-imperialist values.

The controversy has also reignited debate over Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's political decisions. Baby claimed that the road-naming proposal was part of a broader pattern of actions that have attracted criticism from opposition groups. He also referred to earlier disputes surrounding remarks linked to HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency) , which had drawn objections from Left leaders.

Interestingly, the issue has united political rivals in criticism of the Congress government. Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao questioned the Congress party's position, asking why Rahul Gandhi , who frequently criticises the Centre over its relationship with the United States, had remained silent on the decision taken by a Congress-ruled state.

According to Rao, the move exposed contradictions within the Congress party and reflected what he termed an excessive eagerness to please foreign powers. He also challenged the party leadership to clarify whether the decision had its approval.

The row comes at a time when political symbolism and public naming decisions are increasingly becoming subjects of ideological debate. With the inauguration date approaching, attention has now shifted to whether the Congress leadership will stand by the Telangana government's decision or reconsider it in the face of mounting political pressure.

As criticism continues to mount from multiple quarters, the proposed Donald Trump Avenue has evolved from a civic naming exercise into a major political controversy, placing the Telangana government firmly in the spotlight.
